"My treatment includes chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. I'll first share some care methods that are applicable to all these treatments, and then discuss specific tips that were helpful for each individual treatment.
- Stay Active: The best exercise for your body is the next one. If you can stand, don't sit; if you can sit, don't lie down. This habit helps maintain vitality and shifts your focus away from discomfort.
- Exercise at least 30 minutes daily: Fighting cancer is a long-term battle, and you need physical strength to persevere. Even if your body feels tired and uncomfortable due to treatment, encourage yourself to move a little every day. I did arm swings, Yi Jin Jing (a type of Qigong), yoga, and walking. Some people, after consulting with their doctors, continued swimming and running.
- Maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water: Additionally, I made fresh vegetable juices daily to increase my nutrient intake. Because patients have weakened immune systems, I blanched the vegetables first. I adhered to a principle of consuming more vegetables and fewer fruits, controlling the sugar content. During treatment, I drank at least two liters of water daily to help my body detoxify.
- Regularly seek psychological counseling: From the moment I learned I had cancer, I began a battle with death. Every variable, no matter how small, forced patients to reconsider the issue of life and death. I am fortunate to have received professional training as a life coach. During treatment, I applied the theories and methods I had learned to myself and, combined with regular counseling, helped myself overcome fear from the inside out, maintain optimism, and view each treatment as a blessing toward health.
- Regularly receive energy healing: Energy medicine is a mysterious alternative therapy. The energies it deals with can be scientifically proven, such as electricity, magnetism, and light, or non-scientific, such as Reiki, or traditional concepts like Qigong and meridians. There are hundreds of types of energy healing. The most important thing is to find a reliable and reputable therapist. I have learned Reiki myself, and during this time, I was fortunate to have the continuous care of reliable therapists, allowing me to personally witness the synergistic effects of mainstream medicine combined with energy healing. If possible, doing it once a week can greatly help with physical recovery.
- Immediately report any uncertainties or concerns to your medical team: During this period, your immune system is weakened, making you prone to various ailments, and your mood can easily fluctuate under the influence of medication. In the US, making a same-day appointment often requires waiting several weeks. Fortunately, my hospital has an internal email system, allowing me to immediately write to my attending physician for help when needed and receive proper treatment. A friend told me that in Taiwan, each patient has a case manager who can provide comprehensive resources and care on a daily basis."
